Home remodeling in Redding, CA

Kitchens, bathrooms, floors and whole-home remodels for Redding homeowners, planned for some of the hottest summers in the state and for the wildfire rules on the city's western edge.

Heat drives a lot of Redding projects

Redding sits at the north end of the Sacramento Valley, and summer days over 100 degrees are routine. In a house, that shows up in high cooling bills, rooms that never get comfortable, exterior paint that chalks and fades early, and decks and patios too hot to use in the afternoon.

A lot of the most useful work in Redding is aimed at that:

  • Attic insulation brought up to current levels
  • Window and door replacements to cut heat gain
  • Covered patios and shade over decks
  • Exterior paint and stucco repair, scheduled for spring or fall so coatings cure properly

Rooms that never cool down

Most Redding homeowners have at least one room that stays hot all summer, usually one facing west or sitting under a poorly insulated part of the attic. Before recommending anything, we look at the attic: how much insulation is there, how it's vented, and whether ductwork runs through it uninsulated or disconnected.

Often the fix is less dramatic than a new HVAC system. Adding insulation, sealing gaps around the ceiling, replacing a large single-pane window or shading a west wall can change how a room feels. We'll tell you plainly which of those is worth the money in your house.

After the Carr Fire

The Carr Fire in July 2018 destroyed more than a thousand homes in Shasta County, including neighborhoods on Redding's west side. Many of those have since been rebuilt. For owners of rebuilt homes, the projects now are often the ones that got cut from the original budget: decks, patios, landscaping, upgraded kitchens and finished garages. Those houses were built under recent energy and wildfire codes, so the work there tends to be about finishes and outdoor space rather than insulation and wiring.

On properties in mapped fire hazard areas, exterior work is built to California's wildland-urban interface standards. That means ember-resistant vents, tempered glass in windows, and ignition-resistant decking near the house. We spec compliant materials in the written scope so the price covers work that will pass inspection.

Permits and power

Homes inside city limits are permitted through the City of Redding's Development Services Department. Homes in unincorporated Shasta County go through the county's building division. We confirm which applies to your parcel before pricing.

Redding also runs its own electric utility, Redding Electric Utility, so a remodel that upsizes the electrical service for a new kitchen, central air or EV charging has to be coordinated with REU. We build that into the schedule.

Common Redding projects

  • Kitchen remodels, from new surfaces to full layout changes
  • Bathroom remodels and tub-to-shower conversions
  • Flooring, baseboard and interior paint
  • Doors, windows and attic insulation
  • Decks and covered patios
  • Finishing work on rebuilt homes

Working in Redding from Chico

Redding is the north end of our service area, so jobs here are planned tightly. Materials are ordered early and staged before the crew arrives, inspections are booked ahead, and days on site are full ones. The process doesn't change: walkthrough, written scope with a fixed price and materials listed, the build with dust walls, floor protection and a swept site daily, and a final walkthrough with the punch list closed. Tyler runs every job himself.

If you're planning several rooms, tell us up front. Sequencing a kitchen, a bathroom and new flooring in one schedule costs less than three separate projects, and it means fewer weeks of living in a job site.

Questions people ask

Do you really take jobs in Redding when you're based in Chico?

Yes. Shasta County is part of our service area. The jobs are planned so the distance doesn't show up in the schedule: materials staged ahead, inspections booked in advance, and full days on site.

Who issues permits for a Redding remodel?

Inside city limits, the City of Redding's Development Services Department. In unincorporated areas, Shasta County. We handle the application and inspections either way.

Can you add a deck or patio to a Carr Fire rebuild?

Yes. On lots in fire hazard areas the deck has to meet the wildfire rules, which affects decking, framing details and what can go underneath. We include compliant materials in the scope and the fixed price.
