Bathroom remodeling in Chico, CA

From a new vanity and tile floor to tearing a bathroom down to the studs and rebuilding it. You get the scope and a fixed price in writing before we start, and a bathroom that stays dry behind the tile for years.

A bathroom is a small room with a lot going on

Square foot for square foot, the bathroom packs more trades into less space than any other room in the house: plumbing, electrical, ventilation, waterproofing, tile, carpentry and paint, all inside a room you need every morning. CCB Construction is a residential construction and remodeling contractor based in Chico, and Tyler Carlisle runs every job himself, from the walkthrough to the punch list. That matters in a bathroom, where most of the work that decides whether it lasts ends up hidden behind tile.

Tyler also buys, renovates and resells houses in the area, so he knows which bathroom upgrades buyers notice and which ones just add cost.

Three levels of bathroom remodel

Refresh. The tub, toilet and plumbing stay where they are. New vanity and top, faucet, mirror, lighting, exhaust fan, flooring and paint. This is the right call when the shower or tub surround is in good shape and the rest of the room just looks dated.

Pull and replace. Everything comes out to the studs and goes back in the same footprint: new tub or shower, new waterproofing and tile, new valve, vanity, toilet, floor, fan and lighting. Most Chico bathroom remodels land here, because a 30-year-old tub surround usually hides some water damage and the only real fix is to open it up.

Reconfigure. The layout changes. A tub becomes a walk-in shower, a wall moves to make room for a double vanity, or a closet becomes part of a larger primary bath. Moving drains, venting and circuits means a permit and inspections, and it is the option that changes how the room works.

What drives the price of a bathroom remodel

We give fixed prices in writing after a walkthrough, because two bathrooms the same size can come out very differently. These are the decisions that move the number most.

  • Tub versus shower. A tub-to-shower conversion means a new shower pan or a mortar bed, a moved or resized drain, and full-height waterproofing. Keeping a tub and replacing it in place is simpler.
  • Tile. Large-format porcelain, small mosaics, niches, benches and floor-to-ceiling walls all add labor. Tile coverage and layout complexity usually matter more than the price per square foot of the tile itself.
  • Moving fixtures. Every fixture that moves means drain, vent and supply work, often in a crawlspace or through a slab.
  • Glass and fixtures. Frameless glass, thermostatic valves and multiple shower heads add cost and lead time.
  • What is behind the walls. Rotted subfloor around the toilet, a leaking shower valve or galvanized supply lines are common in older Chico houses. We look hard during the walkthrough, and anything we find later comes to you as a written change with a price before we do it.

How a bathroom project runs with us

Same four steps as every job. First, a walkthrough: we look at the plumbing, venting, floor framing and electrical, and talk through what you want and what you want to spend. Second, a written scope that lists what is included, what is not, and the materials you picked, with a fixed price. Valves, vanities, glass and tile get ordered as soon as you sign so the schedule does not wait on them.

Third, the build: demo, framing and blocking, rough plumbing and electrical, inspection if the job is permitted, cement board or a membrane system, waterproofing, tile, vanity and fixtures, paint and trim. Glass gets measured after tile is done and installed last. We put up dust walls, protect the floors to the bathroom and sweep the site every day. Fourth, a final walkthrough where we run every fixture together and close out the punch list.

Chico-specific things we plan around

Many Chico homes from the 1950s through the 1980s have one full bath for the whole house, so we plan the schedule around the days you will be without it and, where possible, keep the toilet working until late in the job. Older houses on raised foundations often have soft subfloor around the toilet and tub from slow leaks; slab houses mean drain changes involve cutting concrete. Exhaust fans in older bathrooms are often missing or vented into the attic, and with Chico's hot, dry summers and damp winters, a properly ducted fan to the outside is one of the cheapest ways to protect a new bathroom.

Beyond the bathroom

Bathrooms are often done alongside the hall flooring, baseboard, doors and interior paint, or together with a kitchen. Planning several rooms at once is cheaper than coming back later, and you deal with one contractor and one schedule.

Questions people ask

How long does a bathroom remodel take in Chico?

A refresh is often one to two weeks on site. A pull-and-replace bathroom usually runs three to five weeks once materials are in hand, with tile and glass setting most of the schedule. A reconfigured bathroom with moved plumbing takes longer and adds permit time up front.

Do I need a permit to remodel a bathroom?

Replacing a vanity, toilet or flooring in the same spot generally does not. Moving drains or supply lines, adding circuits, replacing a shower valve in a new location or changing walls does. Inside city limits that goes through the City of Chico Building Division; outside the city it is Butte County. We handle the permit as part of the job.

Can you convert my tub into a walk-in shower?

Yes, and it is a common request. It involves removing the tub, adjusting the drain, building a properly sloped and waterproofed shower floor, and tiling or installing a surround. If it is the only tub in the house and you plan to sell soon, we will talk through whether keeping one tub makes sense.

What do you need from me before you can give me a price?

A walkthrough of the bathroom, a conversation about what you want changed and roughly what you want to spend, and your material picks or at least a direction. From that we write a scope with a fixed price before anything is scheduled.
