Flooring installation in Chico, CA
Luxury vinyl plank, tile and hardwood, laid over a subfloor that has been checked and fixed first. New floors with the baseboard, transitions and door trim done as part of the same job.
A floor is only as good as what is under it
Most flooring problems people call about are not flooring problems. A plank floor that clicks and gaps, tile that cracks along a line, or hardwood that cups near the back door usually comes back to a soft subfloor, an uneven slab or moisture. CCB Construction is a residential construction and remodeling contractor based in Chico, and we treat flooring as a project: subfloor, floor, baseboard and trim together. Tyler Carlisle runs every job himself, and because he also buys, renovates and resells houses in the area, he has laid a lot of floor in older Chico homes and knows what tends to be underneath.
Our own crew handles the whole job: tearing out the old floor, repairing or leveling the subfloor, installing the new flooring, and running the baseboard and transitions at the end. One scope, one price, one crew.
Choosing a floor
- Luxury vinyl plank (LVP). The most common choice we see in Chico right now. It is waterproof, holds up to pets and kids, and floats over most flat subfloors. Quality varies a lot by wear layer and core, so we help you pick one that will last rather than the cheapest box.
- Tile. Porcelain is the go-to for bathrooms, laundry rooms and entries. It needs a stiff, flat substrate, so on raised-foundation houses we check the joists and subfloor before committing to it.
- Hardwood and engineered wood. Engineered wood handles Chico's swings between dry summers and damp winters better than most solid wood, and can go over slabs where solid hardwood usually cannot. Solid wood can be sanded and refinished many times.
- Carpet still makes sense in some bedrooms, and we can plan around it where you want it.
What drives the cost of a flooring job
We give a fixed price in writing after a walkthrough. These are the things that move it.
- Square footage and layout. Running one floor through the kitchen, living room and hall with no transitions is efficient. Lots of small rooms, closets and doorways add cuts and labor.
- Removal. Carpet comes up fast. Glued-down vinyl, old tile set in a mortar bed, or several layers of flooring stacked on each other take much longer. Older sheet vinyl and its adhesive can contain asbestos and should be tested before it is disturbed.
- Subfloor and slab prep. Replacing water-damaged plywood, re-securing squeaky subfloor, sistering a sagging joist, or grinding and leveling a slab is often the difference between a floor that lasts and one that doesn't.
- Stairs. Each tread and riser is its own piece of work.
- Trim. New baseboard, quarter round, door casing and undercutting door jambs and doors for the new floor height.
How a flooring project runs with us
First, a walkthrough: we measure, check the subfloor or slab for flatness and moisture, and look at transitions to other rooms. Second, a written scope with a fixed price that spells out removal, subfloor work, the flooring product, transitions and trim, and which rooms are included. Flooring gets ordered and delivered early so it can acclimate in the house where the product calls for it.
Third, the build: furniture plan, removal, subfloor repair and leveling, underlayment, installation, then baseboard, transitions and touch-up paint. Floors that are not being replaced get protected, and the site gets swept daily. Fourth, a final walkthrough room by room before we call it done.
Chico-specific things we plan around
Chico has a lot of older raised-foundation homes and a lot of slab-on-grade ranch houses, and they need different prep. On raised floors, the usual issues are soft spots near tubs, toilets and exterior doors, and joists that have sagged over decades. On slabs, it is dips, cracks and moisture. Summer heat matters too: some flooring products have temperature limits for installation and acclimation, so in July and August we keep the house conditioned while the floor goes in.
Beyond the floor
New floors are the natural time to replace baseboard, paint walls before the floor goes down, and swap interior doors. They also pair with kitchen and bathroom remodels so the floor runs continuously through the house. Doing those together is cheaper than coming back later.
Questions people ask
Can LVP go right over my existing floor?
Sometimes. It can go over a flat, well-bonded vinyl or tile floor, but not over carpet, and not over anything with soft spots or big height changes. Going over an old floor also raises the floor height at doors and appliances. We look at it during the walkthrough and tell you which way makes sense.
How long does flooring installation take?
A single room is often a day or two. A typical Chico house with LVP through the main living areas is usually several days, longer if there is tile removal, subfloor repair or slab leveling. Tile takes longer than plank because of setting and grout time.
Do I need to move out?
No. We work room by room and plan furniture moves with you. With tile, you will be off the newly set areas for a day or so.
Do you replace baseboard as part of the job?
Usually, yes. Old baseboard rarely comes off clean, and new floors are often a different height. We include baseboard, quarter round where needed, transitions and door adjustments in the scope so the room is finished, not just floored.
