Interior and exterior painting in Chico, CA

Paint is the last coat on a lot of repair work. We fix the drywall, trim, siding and rot first, then paint, so the finish looks right and holds up in Chico's sun.

Painting as part of the job, not a cover-up

Fresh paint over cracked drywall, failing caulk or soft fascia looks good for a season. CCB Construction is a residential construction and remodeling contractor based in Chico, and we handle painting as the finish step on repair and remodel work: patching and texturing drywall, replacing damaged trim and siding, rebuilding rotted window sills and fascia, then prep and paint. Tyler Carlisle runs every job himself, and because he also buys, renovates and resells houses in the area, he knows how much a clean paint job does for how a house shows.

Our own crew does the painting, along with the drywall patching, caulking and carpentry repairs that have to happen first. You get one scope and one price instead of lining up a handyman and a painter separately.

Interior projects

  • Drywall repair and paint. Patches from old plumbing or electrical work, settling cracks over doors and windows, water stains, and nail pops get repaired and textured to match before anything is painted.
  • Trim and doors. New baseboard, casing and interior doors installed and painted, or existing trim repaired, filled, caulked and refinished.
  • Whole-house repaints, often before a sale or after moving in, done alongside flooring and fixture swaps.
  • Ceilings. Water-stained ceilings get sealed with a stain blocker so the mark doesn't bleed back through. Textured ceilings in older homes should be tested before they are scraped or sanded.

Exterior projects

  • Siding and trim repair, then paint. Rotted fascia, rafter tails, window sills, door jambs and siding boards get replaced with new material before the house is painted.
  • Stucco patching and paint, where cracks get repaired and the patch is blended before coating.
  • Fences, decks and outbuildings painted or stained after board and post repairs.

Exterior paint fails first where the sun and water hit hardest. On most Chico houses that is the south and west walls, window sills and the bottom of the siding, so that is where we look hardest during the walkthrough.

What drives the cost of a paint project

We give a fixed price in writing after a walkthrough. The biggest factors are:

  • Repair before paint. The amount of drywall, trim or siding work is usually the largest variable.
  • Prep. Scraping, sanding, caulking and priming take more time than the topcoat. A house that has peeled for years needs far more prep than one painted on schedule.
  • Height and access. Two-story walls, steep lots and tall ceilings need ladders, planks or lifts.
  • Color changes. Going from dark to light, or covering bold colors, usually takes extra coats.
  • Older paint. Homes built before 1978 may have lead-based paint. Disturbing it calls for testing and lead-safe work practices, and we plan for that in the scope.

How a paint project runs with us

First, a walkthrough to look at the surfaces, the repairs needed and the colors you have in mind. Second, a written scope with a fixed price that lists the repairs, the surfaces being painted, the number of coats and the paint products. Third, the work: repairs, prep, masking and protection, primer, then finish coats. Furniture and floors get covered, landscaping is protected on exteriors, and the site is cleaned up every day. Fourth, a final walkthrough with you to mark and fix any touch-ups.

Chico-specific things we plan around

Chico summers are hot and dry, and many paints have temperature limits for application. On exteriors in July and August we work the shady side of the house and start early, so paint isn't going on a wall baking in afternoon sun. Winter rain limits exterior work to dry stretches. The sun breaks down caulk and paint on south- and west-facing walls faster than people expect, so better prep and quality paint pay off here.

Questions people ask

Do you take paint-only jobs?

Yes. A single room, the whole interior or a full exterior repaint all work. If the walkthrough turns up drywall damage, rotted trim or siding that needs replacing first, we quote that in the same scope so the paint goes on over sound surfaces.

How long does exterior paint last in Chico?

It depends on prep, product and exposure more than anything. South and west walls weather faster here than shaded sides. Fixing rot, caulking properly and using a quality exterior paint are what stretch the time between repaints.

Can you match my existing wall texture?

Yes. Orange peel, knockdown and smooth finishes are all matched as part of the drywall repair before paint, so patches don't show once the wall is painted.

Do I have to pick colors before you can price it?

No. The price depends on surfaces, repairs and prep, not on the color. You can pick colors after you sign the scope, as long as it is before the work starts.
